Two thoughts. The types of conservatives and liberals referred to in this missive are not in positions of power in either party. Current GOP leadership has been convinced they will never lose another presidential election, and are acting accordingly .

A perfect storm is always the result of the convergence of several factors, but one of them should forever stay at the forefront of our attention: the MSM's dereliction of their duty to inform people.
I will try the avoid the easy excuse of sociological conditions as the cause for our own indifference: the multidimensional push and pull of a ship going every which way. Trying to fit a flood the zone with shit strategy with a flood the zone with truth strategy not working.
It seems that the Platner election hit closer to home because it was advocated for as a path to a solution through institutional methods (similar to NYC and how that upsets the DMC), but than… it failed so we just must hold out longer… because Congress still wanted the war.
Everyone is mentioning the US military exercises of the past that showed this military outcome and how the military ignored it, but that feels like an “I told you so” type solution. That most people are against this because we are losing and there is no veneer of winning. Being too young to remember any of the other excursions and wars into the gulf states… this feels different somehow.
Like noticing laced brownies because someone forgot the sugar to hide the taste. Maybe it takes a “mad” president to show the “madness” of imperial projects… but that won’t stop people from saying we simply need to put sugar back into the original recipe. So the response of “losing the war” is just a shrug of a bad patch of brownies… there are many who still think it’s “winnable” because the military complex says it is and we just didn’t do it right “this time.”
We have here A Tale of Two Justice Departments. Biden appointed an attorney general who fretted while Rome burned. Trump ignored the word Justice and turned it into a Department of Gasoline and Matches. Trump has a virtual blank check to rob the country blind, harass his enemies and pursue any criminal enterprise at home and abroad, leaving the already feckless opposition, fearful of its own minuscule radical left flank, dispirited and hopeless.
The leadership of the Democratic Party are old yuppies. Yuppies may pay lip service to the concepts of equality and egality, but most of them think that anyone who gets dirty at work is dumber than anyone who doesn’t , they want to be rewarded for having made “good choices”, and in their hearts they think that if the stock market is ok, the nation will be ok, too. It feels like they study people in work clothes like anthropologists, instead of like neighbors would.
democratic party is very very strongly anti rape. any indication of it and your gone. I like the platner. but he was a ground troop marine, his four tours left him having to cure his violence, and it took awhile. he was a good campaigner, passionate, personable and progressive. I was sorry to see him go ---- his ex girlfriend was ambivalent and seemed to be somewhat manipulated by the press. One girl seemed real, one seemed political, she was the one democrats ignored. there is some conflicting evidence that the ex asked him over. BUT in democratic party any hint of it and your out.
It struck me this morning, a little random thought that bubbled up as I did dishes: "Republicans are happy and insecure. Democrats are unhappy and secure."
We've had nearly fifty years of the Right disassembling education, and with it civic education, as well as fifty years of the Left painting the US government as an imperial menace with countless crimes and atrocities to its name.
So, yes, nobody cares, for one, and when they *do* their model of how things work is wrong ("We're all really, historically mad and so we'll vote No and it will change, also the President is the only race that counts".) With gerrymandering, attacks on the Voting Rights Act, and other master moves by what is really a minority party, elections depend on a tiny (and shrinking) group of people who, let's face it, don't really know enough about what's going on to have a firm opinion.
